It is considered a prog rock concept album, and featured the singles " Mutilated Lips" and " Ocean Man", the latter gaining a significant following after being a song on the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie soundtrack. The nautically-themed album The Mollusk followed in 1997. It gave way to the singles " Piss Up a Rope" and "You Were the Fool".
Ween's next album, released in 1996, was titled 12 Golden Country Greats and was recorded with several prominent Nashville musicians, featuring a distinct country sound. In 1994 Chocolate and Cheese was released, which spawned the singles " Voodoo Lady", " Freedom of '76", and "I Can't Put My Finger on It". While touring for this album, they played at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which would later be released as a CD/DVD live album in 2008 titled At the Cat's Cradle, 1992. It features their highest-charting single to date, " Push th' Little Daisies". Later, Ween signed with Elektra Records and released their major label debut Pure Guava in 1992.
In 1991 they signed with another independent label, Shimmy-Disc, and released The Pod. Starting out with a few locally released demo tapes, including The Crucial Squeegie Lip, AXIS: Bold as Boognish, and The Live Brain Wedgie / WAD Excerpts, the band was picked up by independent label Twin/Tone Records in 1990 and released their debut GodWeenSatan: The Oneness.

Shortly after, they got signed to Shimmy Disc and picked up by Elektra, with whom they had a series of College Hits (and even some mainstream success). After self-releasing a bunch of cassettes, they got signed to Twin/Tone and did their first record. įormed in 1984, the Ween brothers (actually not brothers and named Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo) met in a junior high typing class and made records to amuse each other and their friends. Ween reformed in late 2015 and toured extensively with no stated plans to release new recorded material. After a 28-year run, Freeman quit the band in 2012, citing the need to focus on his alcohol and drug addiction issues. Despite never receiving much mainstream recognition, Ween developed a large, devoted cult following and garnered critical acclaim. While Ween is generally categorized as an alternative rock band, they are known for their highly eclectic catalog of songs inspired by funk, soul, country, gospel, prog, psychedelia, R&B, heavy metal, punk rock, and more. The band's highest charting single is " Push th' Little Daisies" (1993), which was a hit in the United States, New Zealand and Australia. Ween performed as a duo backed by a Digital Audio Tape for the band's first ten years of existence before expanding to a four-piece-and later five-piece-act.
After meeting in a middle-school typing class, the two began playing music and immediately chose the name Ween as well as their Ramones-inspired pseudonyms. Ween is an American alternative rock band formed in New Hope, Pennsylvania, in 1984 by childhood friends Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, better known by their respective stage names, Gene and Dean Ween.
